Liverpool escaped in the League Cup thanks to "the master caught 11m"

Thursday 10/11/2022 06:32

Goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher pushed three penalty kicks 11m, helping Liverpool win Derby County in the third round of the 2022/23 British League Cup last night.

Draw 0-0 in the official 90 minutes, Liverpool and Derby County did not have to play extra time but immediately entered the penalty shootout. Here, 18-year-old Liverpool player Stefan Bajcetic was saved by Joe Wildsmith in the first turn. In the next turn, goalkeeper Kelleher corrected his juniors when he pushed Conor Hourihane's left kick.

In the third turn, the 23-year-old goalkeeper continued to pour to the left to block Craig Forsyth's shot, giving Liverpool a chance to pass. But then, Roberto Firmino shot again with a flute foot over the bar.

Liverpool's No. 2 goalkeeper, Kelleher shines again in the penalty shootout 11m

In the decisive turn, Kelleher saved Lewis Norman Dobbin's left kick. This time, Harvey Elliott took advantage of success with a sinking kick to the right corner, against the direction of Wildsmith's judgment, bringing Liverpool 3-2 victory.

The struggling victory at home helped coach Jurgen Klopp's teachers and students enroll in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. This is also the tournament Liverpool is the defending champion.

For Kelleher personally, he has only played 18 matches for Liverpool, but this is the 4th time, the goalkeeper born in 1998 has helped the host club win the penalty shootout. According to Independent, Kelleher has had 6 successful saves in penalty shootouts, an achievement no goalkeeper in the history of "The Kop" can touch.

Remember last season, it was Kelleher who helped Liverpool beat Chelsea 11-10 in the penalty shootout in the final at Wembley. In the decisive turn, while Kelleher finished accurately, colleague Kepa Arrizabalaga shot into the sky, helping Liverpool win the League Cup for the first time under Jurgen Klopp.

Last night, Klopp changed the entire squad compared to the 2-1 victory over Tottenham in the Premier League last weekend. Not only reserve players like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Nathaniel Phillips or Joe Gomez, the German coach also gives opportunities to many young players such as 19-year-old right-back Calvin Ramsay, 17-year-old midfielder Bobby Clark, 18-year-old midfielder. Stefan Bajcetic Maquieira, 18-year-old winger Melkamu Frauendorf or 20-year-old striker Layton Stewart.

The club and Merseyside held the ball 74%, shot 19 times but could not put the ball into Joe Wildsmith's net even once. Even if some of the faces of the first team like Firmino, Darwin Nunez, Harvey Elliott were introduced in the second half, they could not make a difference against the rolling defense of "The Rams".
